Excerpt from passage
Matteo
Ricci was a Christian missionary to the Chinese
in the late 16th century. When Ricci went
to China, in 1583, he was the first Christian
missionary who had been allowed into China
in over 200 years! Ricci had a special way
of spreading Christianity to the Chinese that
was very different from the ways of other
missionaries of his time. His methods were
so successful that he is still honored in
China today.
Matteo
Ricci was born in Italy. He loved to learn
and had a strong faith in God from the time
he was a little boy. He was very intelligent
and was good at mathematics, science and mapmaking.
Ricci was also well known for his ability
to memorize and remember things. It was said
that he could read a page of a book one time
and then repeat it without making any mistakes.
This unusual talent helped him to learn to
write and speak the difficult Chinese language.
China
When Ricci first entered China, he was greeted
with hostility; especially from the educated
Chinese nobles, call literati. The Chinese
were very suspicious of foreigners. Ricci
had to quickly find a way to gain their respect
so that they would listen to him and he could
share Christianity with them. (continued...).
