WHAT IS GOVERNMENT
AND WHAT SHOULD IT DO?

LESSON 4: What Kinds of Laws are There?

Objectives:

This lesson continues to introduce elementary school children to the concepts of government and citizenship. It introduces different types of laws and rules that can be found in the United States.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students should recognize that laws prevent, mandate, and regulate behaviors.

  • Students should acquire the vocabulary terms institution, regulated, established, and license.

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

 

 

 

 

 

WHAT KIND OF LAWS ARE THERE LESSON PLAN

Student Deliverables:

Teacher should have copies of the Lesson 4 story and handouts (see below) to distribute to the class.

Sequence of Events:

  • Distribute handouts. Read through the handouts as a class. Elicit student participation.

  • Optional: Assign students to read particular parts, e.g. Mr. Green or "you."

  • Review the glossary terms, and discuss as necessary.

  • Allow students time to work on worksheet. Answer questions as needed.

  • Review answers as a class (key below).

Student Tasks:

  • To complete the worksheet portion of the handout using the story as reference.

References/Resources:

This lesson reviews standards 1A-1C and begins standards 1D and 1E.
