WHAT IS GOVERNMENT
AND WHAT SHOULD IT DO?

LESSON 6: Are all laws good ones?

Objectives:

This lesson continues to introduce elementary school children to the concepts of government and citizenship. It demonstrates that not all laws are equally fair or enforceable.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students should recognize that some laws are easier to enforce than others.

  • Students should be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a given rule or law.

  • Students should be able to draft rules that are fair, clear, possible to follow, not biased against a particular group.

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

 

 

 

 

 

ARE ALL LAWS GOOD ONES LESSON PLAN

Student Deliverables:

Teacher should have copies of the Lesson 6 story and handout (see below) to distribute to the class.

Sequence of Events:

  • Introduce and define the terms evaluate and merit.

  • Distribute handouts. Read through the handouts as a class. Elicit student participation.

  • Optional: Assign students to read particular parts, e.g. Mr. Green or "you."

  • Read over the worksheet as a class. Be sure that students understand the tasks.

  • Students should write and evaluate their own rules. Selected rules should be evaluated as a class.

  • Review answers as a class (key below).

Student Tasks:

  • To complete the worksheet portion of the handout using the story as reference.
