LIFE AND CULTURE

 

A reading comprehension lesson on life in India. Students will gain an understanding of daily life in India, and compare and contrast life there to life in the United States. Includes printable teaching lesson worksheet.

 

Suggested Grades:

2nd Grade - 3rd Grade - 4th Grade

 

 

Teaching Objectives:

By completing this lesson, students will be able to demonstrate their reading comprehension skills, including reading strategies, inference, literal meaning, and critical analysis.

 

 

 

 

 

 

INDIA LESSON

 

Directions:

Print the the reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

 

Students should read the story silently, then answer the questions about the story that follow.  Discuss the answers to the questions with the students.

 

 

Excerpt from passage

India is one of the largest countries in the world. There are deserts, jungles, and great rivers in India. Some of the tallest mountains in the world are in India as well. The only country with more people than India is China. Both China and India are countries in Asia.

People in India speak many different languages. There are about 16 languages spoken in India. The main language is called Hindi. There are also many people in India that speak English. Because there are so many different languages spoken in India, traveling through the country is sometimes difficult.
