Excerpt from passage
When the Unites States became a country in 1776, the new country needed a constitution. This is a system of laws that explains how the government of the country and the states work. When the leaders of the states gathered together they had to have something written down so that all the citizens would know how they were supposed to act and how the government would work for them.
This is something that every country in the world needs to have. Thomas Jefferson, who later became president of the United States, wrote the Declaration of Independence, which explains why the country was formed and what it stands for.
