AND WHAT SHOULD IT DO?

LESSON 3: Where does Government get its Authority?

Overview:

This lesson continues to introduce elementary school children to the concepts of government and citizenship. It reviews concepts from the previous lessons and concludes the discussion of authority.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students should be able to identify figures of authority

  • Students should be introduced to the words elected and appointed.

  • Students should understand that governments provide for organization and safety.

  • Students should understand that privileges can be lost when a citizen acts against government authority

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

 

 
 

 

 

GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY LESSON PLAN

Student Deliverables:

Teacher should have copies of the Lesson 3 story and handout (see below) to distribute to the class.

Sequence of Events:

  • Distribute handouts. Read through the handouts as a class. Elicit student participation.

  • Optional: Assign students to read particular parts, e.g. Mr. Green or "you."

  • Review the glossary terms, and discuss as necessary.

  • This worksheet is best given as a homework assignment, but can be done in class.

  • Review answers as a class (key below).

Student Tasks:

  • To complete the worksheet portion of the handout using the story as reference.

References/Resources:

This lesson reviews standard 1A and 1C and completes 1B.
