LESSON 7: What Kinds of Government Are There?

Objectives:

This lesson continues to introduce elementary school children to the concepts of government and citizenship. It explains limited and unlimited governments and demonstrates the strengths of limited over unlimited power.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students should be able to explain the difference between limited and unlimited governments.

  • Students should be able to identify specific limits placed on US authorities.

  • Students should learn and be able to use the terms limited government, unlimited government, amendments, officials, dictators and elections.

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

 

 

 

 

 

WHAT KINDS OF GOVERNMENT ARE THERE LESSON PLAN

Student Deliverables:

Teacher should have copies of the Lesson 7 story and handout (see below) to distribute to the class.

Sequence of Events:

  • Introduce and define the terms for this lesson.

  • Distribute handouts. Read through the handouts as a class. Elicit student participation.

  • Read over the worksheet as a class. Be sure that students understand the tasks.

  • Students should complete the worksheet independently.

  • Review answers as a class (key below).

Student Tasks:

  • To complete the worksheet portion of the handout using the story as reference.

References/Resources:

This lesson reviews standards 1A-1F, covers standard 1G and begins standard 1H.
