Excerpt from passage Father's Day is a day for people to honor fathers and other men who have been father figures to them. Father's Day is celebrated throughout the world on a date that varies from country to country. In the United States, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd is credited with getting Father's Day started as a holiday in the United States. Sonora's father was a veteran of the Civil War who raised his six children alone after their mother died. One day, at a church service in her town of Spokane, Washington, Sonora heard about the first celebration of Mother's Day, which had taken place in 1908 in West Virginia. She quickly convinced her church that a day for fathers should be celebrated as well, and they decided to plan for such a celebration. Sonora wanted her father's birthday, June 5, to be the date for Father's Day, but the committee chose the third Sunday in June instead. On June 19, 1910, the first official Father's Day was celebrated in the United States, though it is thought that similar celebrations had been held earlier in other states.
