Students will learn the term VARIABLE and its definition. Includes printable teaching lesson worksheet.

 

Objectives:

• Students will learn the concepts behind solving for an unknown quantity using a scale.

• Students will learn the steps involved in solving for an unknown quantity.

• Students will practice solving one-step addition equations that contain both positive and negative numbers.

Sixth Grade - Seventh Grade - Eighth Grade - Ninth Grade - including special education students

Lesson Excerpt:

Introduction

"Let's start off today's lesson by talking about balance. What does it mean to balance?"

Allow time for student answers. Write them on the board. You are looking for students to acknowledge that it takes an equal distribution of weight. They may not use these words in their explanation, but you are looking for this meaning.

"So, you could say that balance is about something being equal or an equal distribution of weight."

On Board: Draw a basic scale. In the middle of the scale put an equal sign so the top of the scale looks like this: _________ = __________.
