About this worksheet

A title is the name of a piece of writing, and a good one does three things: it is short, it tells what the writing is about, and it grabs the reader’s interest. Important words are capitalized, and a title is not a full sentence. This worksheet teaches students what makes a title work and gives them practice writing their own.

Section A gives eight titles and asks students to judge each good or not good. The strong titles are clear and interesting (The Mystery of the Missing Cookies; How Volcanoes Erupt); the weak ones are vague (Stuff; My Report; Things). The reference box teaches the three traits of a good title with its own examples not reused in the items.

Section B is productive: students write titles for a lost-puppy story, a how-plants-grow report, a longer-recess opinion, and a paper-airplane how-to. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample titles. The skill helps finish and present any piece of writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and compare a vague title with a clear, interesting one.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask if each title tells what the piece is about.

Work Section B item 1 together: write a title for a lost-puppy story.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any short, clear, interesting title.

Pair with the Writing Introductions Worksheet or the Writing Hooks Worksheet for a craft mini-unit.
