About this worksheet
Recognizing a simile and building one are different skills, and only the second one improves a student’s writing. This worksheet is about building them.
Section A checks the parts against the reference box: the subject, the comparison, and the test for whether a simile is doing any work. Section B gives four tired similes and asks for a rewrite that keeps the subject and changes the comparison. Section C asks for an original, and Section D puts two of them inside a short description.
The distinction the sheet turns on is that a phrase like as white as snow is not wrong, it has simply stopped producing a picture, which is what makes it worth replacing.

How to Use This Lesson

Answer Section A using the box.
Rewrite each tired simile in Section B, keeping the same subject.
Write your own simile in Section C, then use two in the Section D description.
