About this worksheet
Writers ask questions to learn information, especially in interviews and research. A closed question has a short answer – often yes, no, or one word (Do you like soccer?); an open question invites a longer, detailed answer and usually starts with why, how, or ‘tell me about’ (Why do you like soccer?). This worksheet teaches students to tell them apart and to write good questions.
Section A gives eight questions and asks students to label each open or closed, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches the two kinds and the signal words for open questions, with its own examples not reused in the items.
Section B is productive: students write a closed and an open question for a new classmate, turn a closed question into an open one, and explain why open questions help in an interview. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports interviewing and research writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast a yes/no question with a why question.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask whether each needs a short or a long answer.
Work Section B item 3 together: turn ‘Do you like music?’ into an open question.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any correctly open or closed question.
Pair with the Brainstorming Worksheet or the Using Text Evidence Worksheet for a research mini-unit.
