About this worksheet
Poetry is the friendliest doorway into creative writing for elementary students. The forms are short, the rules are clear, and the payoff is immediate. This worksheet introduces four classroom-ready poem types, asks students to recognize each form on sight, and then has them write a poem in two of the types so the form-vocabulary sticks.
Page 1 opens with a reference box that defines acrostic, list, shape, and free verse with a worked SNOW acrostic so students see exactly how each line begins with the next letter of the topic word. Section A gives five sample snippets across the four types – a TREE acrostic, a food list, a heart-shape description, a free-verse river line, and a CALM acrostic – and students label each one with the matching type.
Page 2 is the writing task. Students compose a 4-line acrostic for the word RAIN (each line starts with R, A, I, N in order) and a 4-line list poem about things in a backpack. Each task has its own writing box so the format is clear.
Page 3 is a compact answer key. Section A lists the five type labels. Section B gives one sample acrostic and one sample list poem – both are SAMPLES, since student answers will vary; the answer key shows what ‘follows the type rules’ looks like in practice.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the SNOW acrostic line by line – point to how S, N, O, W start each line.
Do Section A item 1 together (TREE acrostic) and let students do items 2-5 independently.
Allow 10-12 minutes for the Section B writing tasks; encourage students to brainstorm topic words before writing.
Have students share one of their poems with a partner; partners check that the type rules are followed.
Use the answer key on page 3 as a model for what ‘follows the form’ looks like – student poems can vary widely in content.
Optional extension: have students copy a finished acrostic poem onto colored paper and decorate the topic word.
