About this worksheet
A hook is the first sentence of a piece of writing, written to grab the reader so they want to keep going. This worksheet teaches four reliable hook types – a question, a surprising fact, an action, and a quotation – and gives students practice both spotting them and writing their own.
Section A gives eight example openings (Have you ever tasted a fruit you couldn’t name? / An octopus has three hearts. / The floor shook as the train roared past.) and asks students to name the hook type. The set has two of each type so students learn the pattern of each. The reference box defines the four types with its own examples not reused in any item.
Section B is productive: students write a question hook for a recycling essay, a fact hook for an ocean report, an action hook for a soccer story, and a quotation hook for a surprise-party story. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample hooks. The skill strengthens introductions across narrative and informational writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and read each hook example with enthusiasm so students feel the pull.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask what each opening does to grab attention.
Work Section B item 1 together: write a question hook about recycling before students continue.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any hook that fits the named type and topic.
