About this worksheet
An editorial is a short opinion article in a newspaper. Unlike a news report, which only gives facts, an editorial argues for one position and tries to convince readers. A strong editorial states the issue, gives a clear opinion called the thesis, supports it with reasons and evidence, and ends with a call to action. This worksheet helps students learn the parts and plan an editorial of their own.
Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about how an editorial works. The reference box shows the parts with a school-start-time example, so students have the information they need to answer.
Section B on page 2 has students choose an issue and write a thesis, a supporting reason, and a call to action. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on persuasive writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and identify the thesis in the school-start-time example.
Discuss how an editorial differs from a news report that only gives facts.
Complete Section A independently.
Have students plan their own editorial in Section B, then share theses.
