About this worksheet
A tall tale is a funny, exaggerated story with a larger-than-life hero who does impossible things. Tall tales use exaggeration – stretching the truth in a huge way – to make readers laugh. This worksheet helps students spot exaggeration and use it to write their own tall-tale details.
Section A on page 1 gives eight details – some realistic, some wildly exaggerated, like lassoing the moon or eating wagon-wheel pancakes – and asks students to write realistic or exaggeration. The reference box teaches the idea with Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill, whose feats are not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks what a tall tale is, what exaggeration means, to write an exaggerated sentence, and to invent a tall-tale hero. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds creative writing and figurative language.
