About this worksheet
A speech is a talk given to an audience, and a good short speech has three parts: an opening that grabs attention and states the topic, a middle that gives the main points, and a closing that sums up and ends memorably. This worksheet helps students recognize the parts and draft strong openings and closings.
Section A gives eight lines (Did you know that bees help grow our food?; First, bees pollinate many of the crops we eat) and asks students to label each opening, middle, or closing. The reference box teaches the idea with a speech about dreams, lines not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to name the three parts, write an opening and a closing for a recycling speech, and explain why grabbing attention matters. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward persuasive writing and public speaking.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out how the opening hooks listeners and the closing sticks.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does this start, develop, or end the speech?’
Work Section B item 10 together: write an attention-grabbing opening for a recycling speech.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
