Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A persuasive letter gives students a real reason to argue well: they want the reader to agree or to act. The strongest letters state a clear opinion, back it with reasons and facts, keep a polite tone toward their audience, and finish with an unmistakable request. This worksheet breaks that structure into parts students can recognize and then practice.

Section A gives students 8 clues and a word bank, and asks them to write the matching term (opinion, reasons, facts, request, polite tone, audience). Section B guides composition: state the goal of a persuasive letter, write an opinion, give a supporting reason, and draft a short persuasive letter.

The reference box on page 1 explains each part of a persuasive letter and why staying respectful is more convincing. Section A is on page 1, Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with the term for each clue and sample responses for Section B.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and discuss why a polite tone is more persuasive than an angry one.

Work Section A independently, using the word bank to match each clue.

Move to Section B and brainstorm school topics students feel strongly about before they write.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Writing a Call to Action Worksheet or Persuasive Appeals Worksheet for more persuasive writing.
