Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

For thousands of years, people have told myths to explain the mysteries of the world – why the sun rises, why thunder rolls – and to pass on their values. Myths are full of gods, heroes, and magical powers, which makes them an exciting model for student writing. This worksheet helps students recognize what makes a story a myth and then craft one of their own.

Section A asks students to decide, yes or no, whether each feature is usually part of a myth (explaining nature, including magical beings, teaching a lesson, versus modern settings or true news). Section B guides composition: define a myth, choose a part of nature to explain, invent a character with a special power, and write the beginning of an original myth.

The reference box on page 1 defines a myth and gives an example of a myth explaining thunder. Section A is on page 1, Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for Section A and sample responses for Section B.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students what myths they already know from any culture.

Work Section A independently; discuss why a true news story is not a myth.

Move to Section B and brainstorm parts of nature a myth could explain before students write.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Writing a Fable Worksheet or Writing a Tall Tale Worksheet for more story-type practice.
