About this worksheet
A mystery story is built around a puzzle that must be solved. A detective follows clues, the reader meets suspects who might be responsible, and the story ends with a solution that explains what really happened. This worksheet helps students learn these elements and plan a mystery of their own.
Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about the elements of a mystery. The reference box explains each element and shows them in a sample mystery, so students have the information they need to answer.
Section B on page 2 has students plan their own mystery: the problem, a detective and suspect, a clue, and the solution. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on narrative and creative writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the sample mystery’s elements.
Discuss how clues lead a detective to the solution.
Complete Section A independently.
Have students plan their own mystery in Section B, then trade and try to solve a partner’s.
Pair with the Writing a Tall Tale Worksheet or the Writing a Setting Description Worksheet.
