About this worksheet
A limerick is a short, funny five-line poem. Lines 1, 2, and 5 are longer and rhyme with one another (the A rhyme), while the shorter lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other (the B rhyme), giving the pattern AABBA. This worksheet helps students hear that pattern, then write a limerick of their own.
Section A on page 1 shows a frog limerick and asks students which rhyme group each line belongs to, which lines share the A rhyme, which share the B rhyme, and how many lines a limerick has. The reference box teaches the pattern with a different cat limerick that is not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students to state the rhyme pattern, name the shortest lines, write a rhyming pair, and compose a full AABBA limerick. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward rhyme, meter, and creative writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the cat limerick in the reference box aloud and clap the rhyme pattern.
Complete Section A independently using the frog limerick.
Work Section B item 11 together: write two opening lines that rhyme.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
