Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A journal entry is a personal record of your day that usually begins with the date and tells two things: what happened (the events) and how you felt about them (your feelings). Mixing both makes an entry capture the facts and the writer’s reactions. This worksheet helps students see the difference and write their own entry.

Section A gives eight sentences (We visited my grandmother today; I felt happy to see her) and asks students to label each an event or a feeling. The reference box teaches the idea with a trip to the lake, sentences not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to name the two parts of a journal entry, explain why entries start with the date, write an event-and-feeling pair, and compose a short journal entry. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward personal narrative and reflective writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and sort a few sample sentences into events and feelings together.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this what happened, or how I felt?’

Work Section B item 11 together: write one event sentence and one feeling sentence about today.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.

Pair with the Personal Narrative Worksheet or the Sensory Details Worksheet for a personal-writing mini-unit.
