About this worksheet
A haiku packs a vivid picture of nature into just three lines and seventeen syllables. Because the form is so short and the rule so clear – five syllables, then seven, then five – it is a perfect way for students to play with sound, rhythm, and word choice without the pressure of rhyme. This worksheet teaches the pattern, then guides students to write a haiku of their own.
Section A asks students to recall the structure (lines, syllables per line, whether it rhymes, what it is about) and to count syllables in two sample lines. Section B builds toward composition: explain the 5-7-5 pattern, write a 5-syllable line, write a 7-syllable line, and finally write a complete haiku.
The reference box on page 1 defines the haiku and walks through a snow-themed example, counting the syllables in each line. Section A is on page 1, Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for Section A and sample responses for Section B.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and clap the syllables in each line of the example haiku.
Work Section A independently; have students clap or tap to count syllables in the sample lines.
Move to Section B and build a class haiku together before students write their own.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
