About this worksheet
A free verse poem follows no fixed pattern. It does not need to rhyme, count syllables, or keep a steady beat. Instead, the poet decides where each line breaks and uses strong images, sound, and word choice to share a feeling. This worksheet helps students understand the freedom of free verse and write a poem of their own.
Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about how free verse poetry works. The reference box explains the form with a short rain poem as an example, so students have the information they need to answer.
Section B on page 2 has students choose a subject and write a free verse poem line by line, deciding where to break each line. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the structured poetry forms (haiku, cinquain, acrostic).
