Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A fable is a short story that teaches a lesson called a moral, often using animal characters that act like people. The story shows the lesson through what happens, and the moral is usually stated in one sentence at the end. This worksheet helps students see how the story and the moral work together, then write their own.

Section A gives eight lines from well-known fables (A slow tortoise challenged a fast hare to a race; Slow and steady wins the race) and asks students to label each a story event or the moral. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’, a fable not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to define a moral, explain why fable characters are often animals, write a moral for a greedy-dog story, and compose a short fable. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward narrative writing and theme.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and identify the story events and the moral in ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this what happened, or the lesson?’

Work Section B item 11 together: write a one-sentence moral for the greedy-dog story.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.

Pair with the Fables and Morals Worksheet or the Writing Poetry Worksheet for a creative-writing mini-unit.
