Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A cover letter is a short, formal letter you send with an application for a job, a program, or a volunteer spot. It introduces you, says what you are applying for, explains why you are a good fit with a skill or experience, and ends with a polite thank-you and your name. This worksheet helps students learn the parts and plan a cover letter of their own.
Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about how a cover letter works. The reference box shows the parts with a library-volunteer example, so students have the information they need to answer.
Section B on page 2 has students choose something to apply for and write a greeting, a sentence about their skills, and a closing. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on business letter writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out how the writer connects a skill to the role.
Discuss what makes a writer a good fit for a job, club, or volunteer spot.
Complete Section A independently.
Have students plan their own cover letter in Section B.
Pair with the Writing a Business Letter Worksheet or the Writing a Complaint Letter Worksheet.
