Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A concrete poem, or shape poem, arranges its words to form a picture of its subject – a poem about a tree can be shaped like a tree. This worksheet teaches how the shape and the words work together and guides students to plan a concrete poem of their own.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains a concrete poem with labeled examples of choosing a subject, shape, and words. Section A has eight questions about the form. Section B on page 2 has four planning tasks, including choosing a subject and sketching its shape.

Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every question and sample responses. The worksheet pairs well with the Poetry Elements and Writing a Cinquain worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and review how a concrete poem works.

Answer the eight questions in Section A on page 1.

Plan your own concrete poem in Section B on page 2.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Writing a Cinquain Worksheet or the Poetry Elements Worksheet.
