Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A complaint letter is a polite, formal letter that explains a problem with a product or service and asks for it to be fixed. A strong complaint letter opens with a greeting, describes the problem clearly, adds helpful details such as a date or order number, and makes a fair request like a refund or replacement. This worksheet helps students learn the parts and plan a complaint letter of their own.
Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about how a complaint letter works. The reference box shows the parts with a cracked-lamp example, so students have the information they need to answer.
Section B on page 2 has students choose a problem and write a greeting, details, and a request. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on business and persuasive letter writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and talk through the cracked-lamp example.
Discuss why a polite, clear tone gets a better reply than an angry one.
Complete Section A independently.
Have students plan their own complaint letter in Section B.
Pair with the Writing a Business Letter Worksheet or the Writing a Persuasive Letter Worksheet.
