Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A comic strip tells a short story in a row of boxes called panels, using pictures, speech bubbles, thought bubbles, captions, and sound words. Like any story, a good comic has a beginning, middle, and end. This worksheet helps students learn the parts and plan a comic of their own.

Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about the parts of a comic strip. The reference box names and explains each part, so students have the information they need to answer.

Section B on page 2 has students plan their own comic: the characters and setting, what happens in the first panel, a line of dialogue, and a caption with a sound word. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on narrative writing and dialogue.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out each part on a sample comic.

Complete Section A independently.

Discuss how panels show a story moment by moment.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Writing Dialogue Worksheet or the Beginning, Middle, and End Worksheet.
