Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A cinquain is a short, five-line poem that does not rhyme. Each line follows a set word pattern: line 1 names the subject in one word, line 2 gives two adjectives, line 3 gives three action words, line 4 is a four-word phrase, and line 5 is a single word that renames the subject. This worksheet helps students learn the pattern and write a cinquain of their own.

Section A on page 1 asks eight short questions about how a cinquain works. The reference box shows the word pattern line by line with an OCEAN example, so students have the information they need to answer.

Section B on page 2 has students choose a subject and build each line of their own cinquain to match the pattern. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on poetry writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and read the OCEAN cinquain line by line.

Count the words in each line to confirm the pattern (1, 2, 3, 4, 1).

Complete Section A independently.

Have students draft their own cinquain in Section B, then read it aloud.

Pair with the Writing a Haiku Worksheet or the Writing Poetry Worksheet.
