Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A business letter is the formal cousin of the friendly letter – written to a company, an official, or someone you do not know well, with a clear structure and a polite, professional tone. Knowing its six parts (heading, inside address, greeting, body, closing, and signature) gives students a tool they will use for real purposes, from requesting information to solving a problem.
Section A gives students 8 clues and a word bank, and asks them to write the matching part of a business letter. Section B guides composition: compare it to a friendly letter, write a formal greeting, write a polite request sentence, and draft a short letter body.
The reference box on page 1 names and explains all six parts and reminds students to use formal language. Section A is on page 1, Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with the part for each clue and sample responses for Section B.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and label the six parts on a sample letter projected for the class.
Work Section A independently, using the word bank to match each clue.
Move to Section B and model a polite request sentence before students write.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Friendly Letter Worksheet or Writing an Email Worksheet for more practical writing.
