About this worksheet
A biography is the true story of a real person’s life, written by someone else and told with facts and dates. When people write the story of their own life, it is called an autobiography. This worksheet helps students understand what a biography is and how it differs from an autobiography.
Section A on page 1 gives eight examples – a writer telling a scientist’s life, an athlete telling her own story, and more – and asks students to write biography or autobiography. The reference box teaches both terms by who is doing the writing.
Section B on page 2 asks what a biography is, how it differs from an autobiography, why it must use facts, and to plan two facts for a real person’s biography. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds research and informational writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and clarify the difference between biography and autobiography.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘who is doing the writing?’
Discuss where a writer could find true facts about a person’s life.
