About this worksheet
Tone is the attitude a writer takes toward a topic, and voice is the personality behind the words. Students often write in one flat tone without realizing word choice is a dial they can turn. This worksheet shows that the same fact can sound excited, worried, formal, playful, serious, or friendly depending on the words a writer picks.
Page 1 opens with a reference box that defines voice and tone and lists the six tones, then shows one fact – a storm is coming – written in a playful tone and a serious tone. Section A gives six sentences (an aquarium announcement, an application notice, a worried thought, a casual invite, an evacuation order, and a playful puppy line) and asks students to name each one’s tone.
Page 2 is the rewrite task. Section B gives three plain facts (cafeteria pizza, a class trip, a permission slip) and a target tone for each, and asks students to rewrite the fact so it lands that tone without changing what is true.
Page 3 is the answer key. Section A lists the six tone labels in order. Section B gives one sample rewrite per fact; student answers will vary, and any rewrite that keeps the fact and hits the target tone is acceptable.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and read the playful and serious storm sentences in two different voices so students hear the tone.
Do Section A item 1 together (Excited) and let students label items 2-6 independently.
Before Section B, brainstorm two or three words that signal each target tone (playful, worried, formal).
Allow 8-10 minutes for the three Section B rewrites; the fact must stay true.
Have partners read each other’s Section B rewrites aloud and guess the target tone before checking.
Optional extension: students rewrite one Section B fact in a SECOND tone and compare the word choices.
