Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

When you write a person’s exact words, you place them in quotation marks. Three rules guide correct quoting: put marks around only the exact words, use a comma to separate the speaker from the quote, and begin the quote with a capital letter with the end punctuation inside the closing mark. This worksheet teaches students to punctuate quotations correctly.

Section A gives eight quotations, some punctuated correctly and some with errors, and asks students to write correct or incorrect for each. The reference box teaches the rules with the example ‘The author wrote, “Hope is the thing with feathers.”‘, which is not reused in the items.

Section B asks students when to use quotation marks, to punctuate a quotation correctly, where end punctuation goes, and to write a correctly quoted sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports clear, correct writing that quotes others.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out the comma, the capital letter, and the inside period.

Complete Section A independently – have students check each rule on every item.

Work Section B item 10 together: punctuate a quotation correctly as a class.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Writing Dialogue Worksheet or the Quotation Marks Worksheet for a punctuation mini-unit.
