About this worksheet
Strong elementary writing depends on transitions: without them, even good ideas read like a list of disconnected sentences. This worksheet teaches the four most useful jobs that transitions do — show time order, add a similar idea, show a contrast, and explain a reason — and gives students immediate practice picking the right transition for the job.
Section A presents four sentence pairs from different domains (a school day morning, a science fair, a library visit, a weekend trip) and asks students to choose any reasonable transition that connects them. Section B gives students a flat five-sentence paragraph about learning to ride a unicycle and asks them to rewrite it with at least three transitions. The reference example uses a cooking sequence (recipe steps), which keeps the modeled domain completely independent of the assessed items.
Because there is no single correct answer for transition choice, the answer key gives reasonable sample answers rather than a fixed key. Teachers can credit any transition that fits the relationship between the two sentences.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together. Discuss which transitions show time order vs. contrast vs. addition.
Complete Section A as a class for item 1, then have students finish independently.
Review Section A responses. Highlight any creative transition choices and explain why they work.
Use Section B as an independent revising task. Have students share their rewrites with a partner.
Discuss as a closer: which sentence in the original paragraph was hardest to connect to the next one, and why?
