About this worksheet
The topic sentence is the backbone of a paragraph, and students who can identify and write strong topic sentences produce clearer, more organized writing across every subject. This two-section worksheet builds both recognition and production skills.
Section A gives students six short paragraphs on topics ranging from wolves and rain forests to exercise and cooking. Students read each paragraph and write the topic sentence on the line. Section B reverses the task: students are given the supporting details only and must write a topic sentence that fits them. All six detail sets have clear, scorable correct answers.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A answers are exact (students write the first sentence of each paragraph). Section B lists sample topic sentences for each detail set; any reasonable sentence that names the main idea is accepted.
How to Use This Lesson
Review the reference box with students. Ask volunteers to identify the topic sentence in a paragraph on the board.
Have students complete Section A independently. Remind them that the topic sentence is usually first but to read the whole paragraph to confirm.
Review Section A answers together as a class. Discuss why the identified sentence is the topic sentence and not just another detail.
Move to Section B. Model item 7 together — read the details aloud, identify what they all have in common, and draft a topic sentence together.
Have students complete the remaining Section B items independently. Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check. Pair with the Supporting Details Worksheet for the complementary skill.
