Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Taking notes means writing down only the most important information in short form – key words, not full sentences. Good notes capture the main idea and a few details, which makes them quick to write and easy to study. This worksheet helps students practice the difference between a useful note and a full sentence.

Section A on page 1 gives eight lines – some are short key-word notes and some are full sentences – and asks students to write good note or too long. The reference box teaches the skill with a Sahara example that is not reused in any item.

Section B on page 2 asks why we use key words, has students turn two sentences into short notes, and asks what good notes should capture. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill supports research, paraphrasing, and outlining.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and turn the Sahara sentence into a note together.

Complete Section A independently – have students cross out the small, extra words.

Discuss why short notes are easier to study than full sentences.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Writing a Paraphrase Worksheet or the Summary Writing Worksheet.
