Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Supporting details give a paragraph its substance. Students who understand the difference between relevant details and off-topic facts write more focused, convincing paragraphs in every subject. This worksheet targets that skill from two directions — recognition and production.

Section A presents six topic sentences on topics like bees, volcanoes, exercise, and rainforests. Each is followed by three choices — one strong supporting detail, one off-topic fact, and one vague or unrelated statement. Students write the letter of the best choice. Section B gives four topic sentences on topics like public libraries, bicycle safety, and learning languages, and asks students to write two original supporting details for each.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A answers are fixed letters (a, b, or c). Section B lists sample details for each topic sentence; any accurate, on-topic detail is accepted.

How to Use This Lesson

Review the reference box with students. Discuss what makes a detail supporting versus off-topic using the penguin example.

Complete item 1 of Section A together as a class — read the topic sentence and each choice aloud, then decide which choice directly supports the main idea.

Have students complete the remaining Section A items independently. Review answers as a class, discussing why each distractor is off-topic or too vague.

Model Section B item 7 together: read the topic sentence, brainstorm possible details, and select two that are specific and on-topic.

Have students complete the remaining Section B items independently. Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check. Pair with the Topic Sentences Worksheet for the complementary skill.
