Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A young writer who leaves no spaces is not being careless. Nothing in speech marks where one word stops, so a child writing what they hear writes it as one long run. Seeing that run on the page, and being asked to read it back, is what makes the gap between words feel necessary rather than decorative.

Section A prints six sentences with every space taken out and asks the child to write each one again properly. Section B turns the rule loose on the child’s own writing: six pictures, two ruled lines each, and one thing to check.

The answer key gives the correctly spaced sentence for every item in Section A, and sample sentences for Section B with a note that a child’s own wording may differ and still be right.

How to Use This Lesson

Print the worksheet. Section A is on page one.

Read the first run-together sentence aloud and let students hear the problem.

Show the finger-space trick before students start writing.

Check Section A against page three; read Section B for spacing, not spelling.
