About this worksheet
When students write directions or retell events, order words – first, next, then, finally – keep the reader from getting lost. This worksheet teaches the common order words and gives students practice both ordering scrambled steps and writing their own sequence with order words.
Section A gives two scrambled four-step lists – planting a seed and baking a cake – and asks students to number each list 1 to 4. Working two different lists keeps students thinking about logical order rather than memorizing one answer. The reference box lists the order words with a painting example not reused in either list.
Section B is productive: students name three order words, write three teeth-brushing steps using order words, explain why order words help a how-to piece, and write two sentences about their morning using ‘first’ and ‘then.’ Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill underpins how-to and narrative writing.
How to Use This Lesson

Complete Section A independently – have students think through what must happen before what.
Work Section B item 2 together: write three teeth-brushing steps with an order word in each.
