About this worksheet
Choppy paragraphs are the single most common revision opportunity in elementary writing. When every sentence has the same length, the same opener, and the same type, the writing feels mechanical even when the content is solid. This worksheet builds variety skill with a focused reference, a sentence-type ID task, and three rewrite tasks.
Page 1 opens with a reference box that names the four sentence types – statement, question, exclamation, command – and walks through a same-pattern paragraph alongside a varied paragraph so students see exactly what ‘rhythm’ looks like on the page. Section A then gives five sentences (library hours, homework, puddle warning, polite request, autumn favorite) and asks students to label each by type.
Page 2 is the rewrite task. Students take three sets of three choppy sentences each (about a dog, an after-school routine, and a park) and rewrite each set as TWO sentences using varied lengths and openings. The prompts suggest starting with a preposition or an -ing word to push students past the default subject-first opener.
Page 3 is the answer key. Section A lists the five sentence-type labels. Section B gives one sample rewrite per set – student answers will vary, and any 2-sentence rewrite with mixed lengths and openings is acceptable.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and compare the same-pattern paragraph to the varied one – point to the question, the -ing opener, and the short closer.
Do Section A item 1 together (Statement) and let students do items 2-5 independently.
For Section B, ask students to read each set ALOUD first so they hear the choppiness before they rewrite.
Allow 10-12 minutes for the Section B rewrites; encourage students to try at least one preposition or -ing-word opener.
Have students share their Section B answers with a partner; partners check that the rewrites actually use different lengths AND different openings.
Optional extension: students find a paragraph in their own writing from earlier in the week and apply the variety pass to it.
