Sentence Combining Worksheet
A 3-page revision-craft worksheet for grades 3-5 that teaches students to combine short, choppy sentences into one stronger sentence. About this worksheet
Short, choppy sentences are one of the most common revision targets in elementary writing. Sentence combining is the craft move that turns a flat list of facts into a paragraph with rhythm – and it is one of the few writing skills with research evidence showing it transfers to higher writing quality across the school year. This worksheet isolates the move so students can practice the three main techniques.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines all three techniques (conjunction, relative clause, adjective move) and shows them applied to the SAME pair of sentences (‘Sara is funny. Sara likes science.’) – this is the most powerful teaching move because it shows students that multiple correct combinations are possible. The conjunction technique gives ‘Sara is funny and likes science,’ the relative clause gives ‘Sara, who is funny, likes science,’ and the adjective move gives ‘Funny Sara likes science.’
Section A on page 1 has five two-sentence pairs in different contexts (rain stopping, Mei playing soccer and piano, a long book, Dad cooking dinner, Tina finishing homework). Students combine each pair using any of the three techniques. Section B on page 2 increases the difficulty to three-sentence sets (a hungry dog, a museum trip, two siblings with different sports). Students may combine all three into one sentence or fall back to two combined sentences.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample combinations for every item. Because there are many correct combinations, the key marks every sample with ‘sample:’ and reminds teachers to accept any smooth combination. The goal is fluency, not a single right answer.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud. Have three students each read one of the three combined versions of the Sara sentence aloud and discuss which sounds smoothest.
Work Section A item 1 together – have three students share three different combinations of ‘The rain stopped. The kids ran outside.’ before settling.
Assign Section A items 2-5 independently. Tell students to mark which technique they used (C for conjunction, R for relative clause, A for adjective move).
Section B is the stretch – three sentences combine into one (or two). Item 3 (Lou + brother + sports) is the most diagnostic for the upper end of the grade range.
Use the answer key on page 3 for partner review. The samples are the FLOOR, not the ceiling.
