About this worksheet
Sensory details are the words that tell a reader what something looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels like – the five senses at work in writing. They pull a reader into a scene and make it real. This worksheet teaches students to recognize each sense and then use it on purpose in their own writing.
Section A gives eight details (the bright red kite against the sky, the crunch of dry leaves, the sour bite of a lemon) and asks students to name which sense each uses. The set covers all five senses, with two each for several, so students hear the difference between, say, a touch detail and a taste detail. The reference box teaches the five senses with a kitchen example not reused in any item.
Section B is productive: students write a sensory detail for a beach (sight), a kitchen (smell), a thunderstorm (sound), and a winter morning (touch). Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample details. The skill is the foundation of descriptive and narrative writing craft.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students name the five senses together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask which sense each detail appeals to.
Work Section B item 1 together: describe a beach using sight before students write the rest.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any vivid, on-sense detail.
