About this worksheet
Revising for word choice means going back through writing and replacing vague, overused words – good, nice, big, thing, said – with precise, vivid ones. Vague words are so general they give no clear picture; precise words paint a sharper image and make writing stronger. This worksheet teaches students to spot weak words and upgrade them.
Section A gives eight words (nice, sprinted, thing, glistening) and asks students to write vague or precise. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘good becomes delicious’ and ‘walked becomes tiptoed’, words not reused in the items.
Section B asks students why precise words matter, to replace a vague word in a sentence, to give a precise word for ‘happy’, and to rewrite a sentence with stronger word choice. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is a key part of revising.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and upgrade a few vague words together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this word general or vivid?’
Work Section B item 12 together: rewrite a sentence with stronger word choice.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
