Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A precise noun names something exactly instead of using a vague word. Vague nouns like thing, stuff, animal, and place leave the reader guessing; precise nouns like hammer, tiger, and beach give a clear picture. Good writers replace vague nouns with precise ones when they revise. This worksheet teaches that craft move.

Section A gives eight vague words (animal, food, place, vehicle, thing, person, drink, building) and asks students to write a more precise noun for each. The reference box teaches the difference with an animal-runs-into-a-place example revised to fox-runs-into-a-barn, not reused in the items.

Section B is productive: students rewrite three vague sentences using precise nouns and explain why precise nouns help. Page 3 is a complete answer key with samples. The skill pairs with strong verbs to sharpen descriptive and narrative writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and revise ‘The animal ran into the place’ into a precise sentence together.

Complete Section A independently – have students name an exact noun for each vague word.

Work Section B item 1 together: rewrite ‘The animal ate the food’ with precise nouns.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any clear, precise noun.

Pair with the Strong Verbs and Word Choice Worksheet or the Adding Details to Sentences Worksheet.
