Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Persuasive writers reach readers in three main ways, called appeals. Ethos appeals to trust by showing the writer is honest or expert; pathos appeals to feelings; and logos appeals to logic with facts, numbers, and reasons. This worksheet helps students name each appeal and use all three to build a stronger argument.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to label each ethos, pathos, or logos (for example, ‘As a doctor with twenty years of experience…’ is ethos, and ‘Three out of four dentists recommend…’ is logos). The reference box defines all three appeals with short example phrases that differ from the eight Section A sentences.
Section B on page 2 asks students to write their own logos, pathos, and ethos sentences and to explain why strong essays combine all three. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample responses. The skill builds on the Writing a Call to Action and Writing a Counterargument worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and define ethos, pathos, and logos with the class.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this about trust, emotion, or logic?’
Have students draft their three appeal sentences in Section B and share one aloud.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Writing a Counterargument Worksheet for a persuasive-writing mini-unit.
