About this worksheet
Understanding paragraph structure — topic sentence, supporting details, closing sentence — is a foundational writing skill that students apply in every subject and grade level. This worksheet builds that understanding through two complementary activities: ordering scrambled sentences and writing original paragraphs.
Section A presents four sets of four scrambled sentences on topics including spiders, the water cycle, morning routines, and farmers markets. Students read the sentences, decide which is the topic sentence and which is the closing, and write the correct letter sequence on the line. Section B asks students to write two complete original paragraphs, one about their favorite time of day and one about being a good friend, each requiring a topic sentence, two supporting details, and a closing sentence.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A answers give the exact correct letter order for each set. Section B lists sample responses as a scoring reference; any on-topic paragraph with clear structure is accepted.
How to Use This Lesson
Review the reference box with students using the owl paragraph example. Point out the topic sentence, two detail sentences, and the closing action.
Work through Section A item 1 together: read all four sentences, identify which is the topic (most general), which is the closing (wraps up), and arrange the details in logical order.
Have students complete the remaining Section A items independently. Review the correct order for each set, discussing how students identified the topic and closing sentences.
Read the Section B prompts aloud. Have students plan their paragraph mentally (topic, two details, closing) before writing.
Allow 8-10 minutes for Section B. Use the answer key on page 3 to assess structure — accept any paragraph that follows the topic-details-closing pattern. Pair with the Topic Sentences and Supporting Details worksheets for additional skill building.
