Paragraph Writing Lesson

Introduce students to paragraph structure with this lesson plan and student worksheet. Students learn what a paragraph is, practice identifying topic sentences, and complete exercises that build the habit of staying on topic. Grades 2–4.

Lesson Overview

What Is a Paragraph?

A paragraph is a group of sentences that tell about one idea. Every paragraph starts with a topic sentence that states the main idea. All other sentences in the paragraph should support that main idea.

There are three key paragraph rules students should learn early: (1) indent the first word, (2) begin with a topic sentence, and (3) start a new paragraph any time a new idea begins. These rules apply whether students are writing a single paragraph or a multi-paragraph paper.

The printable lesson plan below includes a sample two-paragraph story on skiing that demonstrates how a new idea signals a new paragraph. The student worksheet gives students practice identifying the topic of a paragraph and crossing out sentences that don’t belong.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Distribute the teacher lesson plan. Read the definition and paragraph rules aloud. Work through the skiing sample story together, pointing out where the indent and the topic sentences appear.

2. Hand out the student worksheet. Students read two short paragraphs, identify the topic of each, decide whether all sentences belong, cross out the off-topic sentence, and rewrite the corrected paragraph.

3. For extended practice, use the application exercise from the lesson: ask students to write their own paragraph (3–5 sentences) describing their favorite animal, keeping every sentence on the topic sentence.
