About this worksheet
A transition is a word or phrase that connects one idea to the next and shows how they relate. Between paragraphs, a transition signals what the new paragraph does compared to the last, keeping an essay smooth so readers do not get lost. This worksheet focuses on the four relationships transitions show: adding, contrasting, time order, and cause and result.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences that begin with a transition and asks students to name the relationship – adds, contrasts, time order, or cause/result (for example, ‘In contrast…’ contrasts, and ‘As a result…’ shows cause and result). The reference box defines the four relationship types with example phrases that differ from the eight Section A sentences.
Section B on page 2 has students write their own sentences using each kind of transition and explain why transitions help a reader follow an essay. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on the Transition Words and Sequencing and Order Words worksheets but works at the paragraph level.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and list the four relationships (adds, contrasts, time, cause/result).
Complete Section A independently, naming the relationship each transition shows.
Have students write their four transition sentences in Section B and read one aloud.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Transition Words Worksheet for a paragraph-writing mini-unit.
