About this worksheet
Opinion writing is one of the most practiced writing modes in elementary school, and these six prompts give students a variety of relatable topics to take a position on. The prompts are designed so that students of any background can form and defend an opinion — there are no factually correct answers, only stronger and weaker arguments.
Section A asks students to weigh in on everyday school topics: nightly homework, the best season, and longer recess. Section B moves into more nuanced territory: the most important school subject, phone use at lunch, and choosing a class pet. Students choose one prompt per section and write their response — opinion, two or more reasons, closing — in the box provided.
Page 3 is a teacher notes page with scoring guidance covering clear opinion statements, supporting reasons, closing sentences, and the common issue of students writing facts rather than opinions. An optional four-point rubric is included.
How to Use This Lesson
Review the reference box with students and model the difference between a fact and an opinion using two short examples.
Read the Section A prompts aloud. Have students choose one and spend a minute thinking about their position before writing.
Allow 8-10 minutes for independent writing. Remind students to include their opinion, two reasons, and a closing sentence.
Repeat for Section B. Encourage students to pick the prompt they feel most strongly about.
Debrief: have two or three students share different opinions on the same prompt. Discuss what made each argument strong. Pair with the Narrative Writing Prompts Worksheet to contrast modes.
